The Impact of One Life Touched by God
“… not by might nor by power, but by My spirit, says the Lord of hosts.” Zech.4:6(NIV)
Long before Africa International Christian Mission, Inc. was a reality, R. Zarwulugbo Liberty was born in Zarwulugbo Town, Nimba County, Liberia, West Africa to the union of Zarwulugbo and Qualienyonnon. It was 1948, the year that far-way Israel was miraculously reborn as a nation. But in Zarwulugbo’s world, raised in an animistic culture, superstition and a traditional religion reigned including much fear of evil spirits. His father held sway as a powerful tribal leader. Young Zarwulugbo was expected by his father to take over the tribal mantle. Therefore, he was allowed to sleep in the his father’s “Fetish house.”
Yet God’s spirit was moving through the late pastor Joe Mein, a Mid-Baptist missionary, who preached the Good News of Jesus to this young boy while attending the Baptist mission. By age 14, he experienced the new birth and began to follow Jesus. As a result, Narway (as he was commonly called) refused to sleep in his father’s “Fetish house.” This, however, was a big blow to the family. His parents stood against him for dashing the hope of their family for the sake of Christ. The call of God upon this young man’s life opened a door of salvation for the entire family and extended relatives. Today, the “Fetish house” of his father has been broken down and a church house is built in the town where God is being worshipped.
In 1968, he married Esther Bantoe, a beautiful dedicated Christian woman. They bore four children – Robertson, Roosevelt, Roseline and Joshua – all of whom have given their own hearts and lives to the Lord. They serve alongside their parents and play key roles in various aspects of AICM’s ministry. God has also blessed them with six grandchildren.
From 1970 to 1980, “Mr.” Liberty served as Chief Accountant for reputable companies and public corporations. That pivotal year, he was called to full-time ministry. He resigned from his lucrative career, sacrificing status and the world’s security for sake of the Gospel. He went door-to-door sharing the essential news of Christ’s salvation for each and every neighbor and stranger. Then the Lord spoke the strange, “impossible” counsel that one day he would become a missionary to the world on both sides of the Atlantic. “Through many dangers, toils and snares,” he crusaded throughout Liberia. On May 20, 1982, the Lord founded through him the Church of the Believers, Inc. And as God would have it, Pastor Liberty was officially ordained in November of that year.
Along with Esther, a gifted evangelist, he planted no fewer than 19 churches. Then the way was opened to found the Liberty Theological Seminary to train others called by God to teach and preach. Later, he moved on to incorporate the Fellowship of Christian Churches of Africa International which now has 256 independent churches in its membership.
Qualified, anointed leaders have been prayed into committed service in various ministries in Africa. They help to prepare the way for God to create and expand present day Africa International Christian Mission, Inc. As the Lord planned, it has become a two-way conduit, nourishing Africa and girding American church leaders for greater impact and fruitfulness from AICM’s beachhead in Florida.
Thus, one humble, courageous man yielded to God is in the midst of bringing about transformations in individual lives and many ministries on both continents. R. Zarwululgbo Liberty’s record speaks for itself; his unusual combination of administrative skill and spiritual dynamism have drawn to AICM creative and dedicated believers willing to work alongside those already seasoned in the ministry.
You can stop right now and pray as God leads for these brothers and sisters and the thousands helped by them. Then, you can listen to His leading; how might He bring you into step with them in some small or large way?
God bless you.
